Liver Transplant Clinicians
Specialised surgical care for patients with advanced liver disease requiring liver transplantation.
Liver transplantation is a complex surgical procedure performed for patients with advanced or irreversible liver disease when the liver can no longer function adequately. The procedure involves replacing a diseased liver with a healthy donor liver and is considered a life-saving treatment for selected patients with end-stage liver disease, acute liver failure, or certain liver cancers.
Dr. Manikandan Kathirvel is involved in the evaluation, surgical planning, and management of patients requiring liver transplantation as part of a multidisciplinary transplant program. Care is coordinated across hepatology, transplant surgery, critical care, and other medical specialties to ensure appropriate patient selection, safe surgical management, and long-term follow-up after transplantation.
Early clinical evaluation plays an important role in determining transplant eligibility and identifying the appropriate timing for the procedure.
When is
Liver
Transplant Needed?
Liver transplantation may be recommended in patients with advanced or irreversible liver disease where medical treatment is no longer sufficient to maintain normal liver function.
Common conditions that may require liver transplant evaluation include:
Advanced liver cirrhosis

Acute liver failure

Selected cases of liver cancer

Recurrent complications of chronic liver disease

Progressive liver disease not responding to medical therapy

End-stage liver disease with declining liver function

Types of
Liver
Transplant
Liver transplantation may be performed using different donor sources depending on the patient’s clinical condition and donor availability.
Living Donor Liver Transplant
In a living donor transplant, a portion of liver from a healthy donor is surgically transplanted into the recipient. The liver has the unique ability to regenerate, allowing both the donor and recipient liver segments to grow back to functional size over time.
This approach can reduce waiting time for transplantation and allows planned surgical scheduling in suitable patients.
Deceased Donor Liver Transplant
In this procedure, the entire liver from a deceased donor is transplanted into the recipient. Donor organs are allocated through regulated transplant programs based on medical priority and availability.
Both living donor and deceased donor transplantation require careful evaluation to ensure suitability for surgery and long-term outcomes.
